20 Something

Well, it’s official. I am no longer a teenager. But I have to also brag here for a moment as well because the last experience of my teens was the best I could have asked for – Queen Bey herself live in concert at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Jake planned the entire thing behind my back, that sweet, cheeky devil. He got my family, friends, co-workers and supervisors in on the whole plan. While I innocently thought I was going to a birthday celebration dinner with a close friend, Jake kidnapped me from my internship and away we went to Toronto. It wasn’t until Brighton on the 401 that he finally spilled the beans. I won’t lie, I cried. Let’s be real, you don’t learn you will be in the same room with Beyonce and not cry.

I have attended several concerts with Jake before, but all of these were old rock concerts of Jake’s choosing because it is his style of music, and don’t get me wrong, I also enjoy it but this concert was on a whole other level. There was singing, dancing, laughter, tears, aggression, guitar and drum solos, a water stage… The whole sha-bang.

There were new songs from Lemonade, somewhat-old favourites like Drunk in Love and Halo and even some Destiny Child oldies to pull at my heart strings. What really set off the water works, though, was the home videos she played throughout the concert on the screen behind her. One of her when she was 16 telling the camera that she got her belly-button pierced that day and a montage of her with Jay-Z and Ivy. She was so humble throughout, thanking individual people for their signs and shirts and really made you leave feeling empowered and fierce.

On my actual birthday yesterday, I woke up to a Tinkerbell birthday balloon and some gifts before starting my day. My placement office had balloons around my desk when I arrived, a signed card and they treated me to a delicious birthday lunch from Greek Oasis with Katrina’s Cupcakes for dessert. I would say I am pretty spoiled with the best internship I could ask for. The night was pretty relaxing, Jake and I just recovered from our fantastic night before in which we only got 2.5 hours of sleep from. We of course went to Denny’s for supper because in case you didn’t know, you get a free grand slam on your birthday! I will be spending Saturday celebrating with my family.

So I guess today is my first full day of being a “20-something”. You know, how you tell someone you are in your twenties when you don’t want to specify how late in your twenties. I may have only just walked into this door of unknown classification as I am only now twenty, but hey, that doesn’t mean I can’t run with the big dogs.

Stay tuned next week for the first of a ten-part blog series about the support team I have in my life.

Happy growing older, my friends!

Until next time,

Tiffany Nobes
